Percs & Benefits - January 2026
Just some hours to February 2026, we're back with this month's recommendation. Whilst the radio show is currently on hold, we aren't definitely stopping this list when tons of great new music being released.
Bass music heavyweight Shackleton is still there to deliver his takes on "mapping a familiar trajectory: the irresistible pull towards dissolution, the gradual erasure of memory, the self rendered irretrievable. It moves between states of consciousness where such distinctions of enlightenment or self-deception are erased," to quote his PR.
When you're thinking it's a deep narrative, this track "The Unbeliever's Pulse" is quite a minimalistic, spacey within synths-driven/sound designs approach that could work to open deep, bassy set. Its rhythm is successfully depicting Shackleton's tradition on contemporary bass music that's definitely spiritualistic.
"Karula" is a part of agoyaka na kaze / 和やかな風, an ongoing curation to compile forward-thinking experimentations from central Japan for Wisdom Teeth (Facta & KLONE's label). A rendition of dancehall rhythms and Indian chanting, "Karula" shows the eclectic values in Nagoya's production scene, which also aligned with the release note, "Spiritually, Nagoya fits the mould of cultural hotbeds like Bristol, Detroit or Melbourne, showing that some of the most innovative creative communities form away from the glare of the capital cities."
