Last month I was in Detroit, where I met some amazing musicians and artists behind record cover designs, and reconnected with the music that first pulled me there. There are endless incredible tracks, but for this time I picked out 10 that felt right. Detroit is deeply connected to the spirit of Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism is a way of reimagining the history and future of the African diaspora through science fiction, music, and art. From Sun Ra to Parliament-Funkadelic, its legacy has been carried forward into Detroit techno. Born amid the city’s industrial decline and social struggles, Detroit techno can be seen as an expression of “rewriting the future from an African diaspora perspective.
