Shelf Notes 016: Kop-Z

notes from the shelf of a trusted ear...

Daniel Ochieng Odhis Copsey, known artistically as Kop-Z, is a Kenyan-British audio-visual artist whose creative journey is profoundly shaped by his upbringing on the industrial outskirts of Salford. His artistic expression represents a vibrant fusion of diverse musical genres, drawing influences from rave, post-punk, reggae, jungle, and the rich sounds embedded in his East African heritage.

''Here is a list of stuff, inspirations from growing up and some more newer inspo too.''

1127 - Tqaseem. Mqamat Elharam (2019)

My G Amr 1127 debut album. Crazy music looking forward to working with in the future. For all manny crew and wherever else. We got him playing @ TWH on the 14th of may come thru.

Fave Track - Zezinia 2 ft. She7ta Wel3a - زيزينيا 2 مع شحتة ولعة

________

4Hero - Parallel Universe (1994)

This is a big one, considered to be one of the first full length storied hardcore-jungle albums. Stuffs crazy and probs influenced so much stuff which would influence other stuff which would then finally influence moi. Afro-future-future.

Fave Track - Wrinkles In Time

________

A Guy Called Gerald - 28 Gun Bad Boy (2020)

Moss Side 4 life.

Fave Track - Sunshine

________

Autechre - LP5 (1998)

Autechre are a big influence on moi. Especially this one, big ups the greater Manchester area.

Fave Track - 777

________

DJ Travella - Mr Mixondo (2022)

I remember hearing this on a train to the peak district in 2022 and it open up a whole new world to me in sound and vision. This opened me up to modern experimental African Music. A realization which eventually took me back home.

Fave Track - Beat Kikosi

________

Gojira - Terra Incognita (2001)

Another big album for me, I became a big metalhead when I was like 12. For a mixed race kenyan-british kid, i wasn't really the stereotypical metal listener, something i remember struggling with growing up. But fuck that now, I have really long dreads so I can headbang as much as I want.  Also this stuff is extremely complex tech death stuff, i rate there was a lot of cross over with my later love of glitched out jungle and drumfunk.

Fave Track - Satan Is A Lawyer

________

Heavee - Unleash (2024)

Another bad boi album 2020s footwork. Footwork is very key for me from when I first heard it when I was younger.

Fave Track - Sumthin' Different

________

Kop-Z - A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System (2025)

Heres one my own pieces brought out by the Second Born lads. Pretty seminal work for me, opened up new paths and visions. Influences me to this day. Artwork by my sister rose.

Fave Track - Eat Go Shop

________

Module Eight - Legacy (2015)

Exit records and dBridge are super big influences on my work. This stuff was a mad collab one off album between dBridge, Skeptical, Loxy, Resound & Kid Drama.
